Large dog door NZ: which Dogwalk® fits a big dog, and how to be sure

The Dogwalk® Medium is the big-dog door of the range. Here is who it fits, who it does not, and the one measurement that settles it.

By the Pet-Tek International team, Auckland — designers of Catwalk® and Dogwalk® since 1999.

“Large” is a feeling, not a measurement. A tape measure turns it into one, and that number says whether the Dogwalk® Medium is your door.

The measurement

Dog standing square, floor to the top of the shoulder blade. Up to about 500 mm at the shoulder, with chest or hips (plus 25 mm) inside the 270 mm opening width, is the Medium. Its usable opening is 270 mm wide by 300 mm high (307 mm in the wood version), and the dog steps through with its back below the top of the opening because the bottom sits at belly height, not on the floor.

Three Mediums

Built for the job

A big dog does not nose a flap open; it walks through it. The Medium’s flap is UV-stabilised polycarbonate, held shut by magnets strong enough to resist a southerly but not a dog. The frame halves clamp through the panel so the weight of a dog on the flap is carried by the door, not the screws.

Security with a big opening

A 270 × 300 mm hole is reachable. Lock the 4-way dial when you are out; on the glass models add the security clip (the Medium ships with locking clips). Keep the door’s key out of arm’s reach of the opening.

Dogs beyond the Medium

Over about 500 mm at the shoulder, or too wide for the 270 mm opening, the Medium is too small and we would rather tell you than sell you one. Measure before you order; if it is close, email the numbers to info@petnest.co.nz and we will say yes or no.

Two dogs

Size for the biggest and fit the bottom of the opening at the smaller dog’s belly. A small dog uses a Medium happily; a big dog cannot use an Intermediate at all.

Quick answers

What is the biggest dog door you make?

The Dogwalk Medium: a 270 × 300 mm opening (270 × 307 mm in the wood-fitting version) for dogs to about 500 mm at the shoulder. Glass-fitting Dual Glaze and Slim Line, or wood-fitting with a clip-on cover.

Do you make an extra-large dog door?

Not currently. Dogs over about 500 mm at the shoulder, or too wide for the Medium's 270 mm opening, are beyond our range. Measure first; many 'large' dogs fit the Medium comfortably.

Can a large dog door go in glass?

Yes. The Medium Dual Glaze fits glass 3–32 mm through a 385 mm hole; the Medium Slim Line suits single glazing and sliders 4–20 mm. A glazier cuts or replaces the pane.
