Replacement flap for your cat door or dog door: identify the model and swap it in minutes

A worn flap is the part of a Catwalk® or Dogwalk® door that most often needs replacing. Here is how to find your model, the right flap, and how to swap it.

By the Pet-Tek International team, Auckland — designers of Catwalk® and Dogwalk® since 1999.

Years of sun and ten thousand cat-pushes will cloud or crack any flap. On a Catwalk® or Dogwalk® it is a few minutes’ work, and because we have designed the doors in Auckland since 1999, flaps are stocked for every current model and most earlier ones.

Step 1: find the model

Look at the frame: most doors have the code moulded in — G-CD, G-SDD, G-IDD, G-DD for the glass doors; W-CD, W-SDD, W-DD for the wood ones; MCD for the Multi-Magnetic. No code? Measure the flap itself:

Flap size Door Flap
165 × 180 mm Catwalk® Standard cat door (glass) G-CDRF
155 × 157 mm Wood cat door / Multi-Magnetic W-CDRF, G-MCDRF, W-MCDRF
187 × 190 mm Catwalk® Maxi G-SDDRF
180 × 227 mm Dogwalk® Small (wood) W-SDDRF
216 × 237 mm Dogwalk® Intermediate (glass) G-IDDRF
270 × 300 mm Dogwalk® Medium (glass) G-DDRF
270 × 307 mm Dogwalk® Medium (wood) W-DDRF

Still unsure? Email a photo of the door to info@petnest.co.nz and we will name it.

Step 2: swap it

Catwalk® and Dogwalk® doors use one of two flap systems. Either way the door can stay where it is, the locking dial is not involved, and every flap comes with its own magnet.

Side-locking flaps — no tools

Glass cat door (G-CD), wood cat door (W-CD), wood small dog door (W-SDD) and wood Multi-Magnetic (W-MCD).

  1. Flex or slide the old flap out of the channel on one side of the frame, then the other.
  2. Fit the magnet to the new flap (below).
  3. Put one side of the new flap into its channel, flex it gently and guide the other side in.

Hinge-plate flaps — a screwdriver and a flat knife

Maxi (G-SDD), Intermediate (G-IDD), glass Medium (G-DD) and wood Medium (W-DD).

  1. Ease off the hinge cover at the top of the flap, then flick off the three cover caps.
  2. Undo the three screws and lift out the hinge plate and the old flap.
  3. Fit the magnet (below), sit the new flap in the frame, lay the hinge plate over it and tighten the screws. Snap the caps back on.

The magnet, the right way round

Hold the new magnet against the magnet in the base of the door frame: it must pull towards it, not push away. Then press it into the recess at the base of the flap — once in, it cannot come out. Open and release the flap a few times; it should swing freely and close firmly.

Each flap’s page has the full steps and a printable guide with photos. Glass Multi-Magnetic (G-MCD)? Email us for the steps.

Dials, clips and magnets

The other wear parts are stocked too: 4-way locking dial sets in clear, white and grey, security clips for the glass Dogwalk doors, and collar magnets for the Multi-Magnetic. All on the spares page.

When a flap is not the fix

A flap that will not stay shut is usually a tired base magnet or a worn brush seal, not the flap; a frame that has gone brittle after decades in the sun is a new door. If you are not sure which, a photo tells us.

Quick answers

How do I know which replacement flap I need?

Find the model code moulded into the frame (G-DD, W-CD and so on) or measure the flap: 165 × 180 mm is the Standard cat door, 187 × 190 the Maxi, 216 × 237 the Intermediate, 270 × 300 the Medium. Each flap page lists the doors it fits.

Do replacement flaps fit old Catwalk and Dogwalk doors?

Flaps are stocked for every current Catwalk and Dogwalk model and most earlier ones. If your door is from an older generation, email a photo of the frame and we will confirm the right flap before you order.

How do I replace a cat door flap?

It depends on the door. Side-locking flaps (G-CD, W-CD, W-SDD, W-MCD) flex out of the frame channels and the new one flexes in, no tools. Hinge-plate flaps (G-SDD, G-IDD, G-DD, W-DD) come out with a screwdriver: hinge cover, three caps, three screws. Either way, check the new magnet pulls towards the frame magnet before pressing it into the flap. Each flap's page has the full steps and a printable guide.
