Cat door installation cost in NZ: what you pay for, and how to pay less
The price of a cat door in NZ is really two prices. Knowing which is which is how you keep the total down without buying a worse door.
By the Pet-Tek International team, Auckland — designers of Catwalk® and Dogwalk® since 1999.

Every cat-door quote in New Zealand is two things added together: a product and a trade visit. Separate them and the number stops being mysterious.
Part one: the door
Fixed, published, the same whether you are in Kaitaia or Invercargill. The Catwalk® range runs from the wood-fitting Slim Line at the bottom, through the glass Standard and Maxi, to the Multi-Magnetic; the SureFlap Microchip sits above those. Prices are on each page and include GST; shipping from Auckland is free over NZ$250.
Part two: the fitting
Wood-fitting: nothing. A jigsaw, the template in the box, an hour. If you would rather not, a handyman does it in the same hour.
Glass, single glazing: a short glazier visit. The hole is cut in place. This is the cheaper glass job.
Glass, double glazing or toughened: a new sealed unit. The unit is made to order with the hole pre-cut and fitted on a second visit. This is the dearer job, and the one most new houses need.
We do not publish glazier prices because we are not glaziers and rates differ by city and pane size. Two quotes with the cut-out diameter (245 mm Standard, 267 mm Maxi) will give you a real figure in an afternoon.
How to pay less
- Buy the door yourself, then book the glazier. An installer-supplied door carries a margin; a glazier cutting a hole does not.
- Use the fixed pane of a slider if it is single-glazed; cutting in place beats a new unit.
- Consider the back door. A wood-fitting door in a timber or uPVC door costs the door and nothing else.
- Do not buy twice. Measure the cat (how) and choose Standard or Maxi once.
What is included in the door price
Both frame halves, the flap, the factory-fitted 4-way lock, fixings, the template or drawing, a 3-year warranty on the door and 1 year on moving parts, and replacement flaps stocked for the life of the door. Nothing else to buy for a wood fit; for glass, only the glazier.

Quick answers
How much does it cost to install a cat door in NZ?
Two parts: the door, which has a fixed price, and the fitting. Wood-fitting is DIY, so the fitting costs nothing. Glass needs a glazier: cutting single glazing in place is the smaller job; double glazing means a new sealed unit and costs more. Get two local quotes with the cut-out size.
Is it cheaper to buy the cat door separately?
Usually, yes. A glazier who only cuts the hole does not mark up a door; an installer who supplies the door does. Buy the model that fits the cat, then book the glazier.
Does a cat door in double glazing cost more?
Yes, because the existing unit cannot be cut: a new double-glazed unit with the hole pre-cut is made to order and fitted in a second visit. The door itself costs the same.
